London calling to the faraway towns...

...Now war is declared - and battle come down

While the common thought amongst the Karl Rove set of right wingers is that San Francisco liberals like myself will be quick to blame America first for the terror attacks in London this morning, they couldn't be further from the truth. As a citizen of a country founded by terrorist attacks on the English, I am angry as hell at the perpetrators of this attack. I bet even the Irish are pissed off about this and putting aside their grievances for at least a day or two. But there's a major difference in how the right and the left react to this kind of news. The right are quick to wrap themselves up in the flag and start talking about how "we should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." While the left try to think of why this might have happened and how we could prevent this sort of thing from happening again. When our country was attacked, the quick response from the right was to pass legislation that erodes our rights and then invade a country that had nothing to do with the attacks and pretty much quit hunting for the people who actually did attack us, all the while calling anybody who questioned this genuinely questionable policy a traitor or worse. And what has this policy done besides radicalize a whole lot of people who were once moderate Muslims to join the jihad against us and bring more terror attacks to our allies in all this? Well, it's managed to flush the lives of some 1800 of our young soldiers down the toilet for no damned good reason at all. And it's helped Dick Cheney's friends make a whole lot of money. The problem here is that you've got fundamentalists fighting other fundamentalists, and that's not going to solve a damn thing. What needs to be stamped off the face of the earth is religious fundamentalism of all stripes. It's the 21st century, for crying out loud! Has the human race evolved at all if we're still killing each other over interpretations of superstitious texts written thousands of years ago and translated over and over to serve the needs of the ruling classes to keep the people in line? What do we need to do to stop this cycle of insanity? I don't attempt to have an answer to that, but I know that what we're doing sure as hell isn't working.

Yeah, that's about dead on. With your permission, I'm using that next time my brother spontaneously explains to me his problems with my voting record. Great post.

I could solve the problem for the left very easily. Just invite Osama to meet me here on the Kansas Flint Hills, man to maggott. I'll give him more of a chance than he ever gave the 3000 who died on Sep 11th, or the hundreds who died in Madrid, or those who died today in London.

Just him and me, that's all I ask. You can come to be his corner man or report for the U.S. media if you'd like.

I'd be willing to live or die to support your rights. From everything I've read you'd be willing to defend your rights, but you wouldn't lift a finger to support someone else's. It's says a lot about you to me. It tells me that you value yourself above everything and everyone else.

You guys absolutely wreak with hypocrisy. You love freedom as long as it doesn't cost you anything. Go down to one of those San Francisco cafe's and have yourself a latte' and "discuss" it all. The rest of us don't need you anyway. And, even if we did, I know we couldn't count on you. Having the enemy fire at you is bad enough, but with you guys we'd have to be watching for friendly fire too.

Phil, I'd be more than happy to hand him over to you or anyone else who could do the job. But all this rhetoric about protecting our freedom is getting awfully tiresome. How are we protecting our freedom by being in an illegal war in Iraq again? How does having a foreign policy that breeds terrorism keep us free? And how about that good old Patriot Act? Your idea of freedom is on the Orwellian side.

Brillant! I totally agree--very articulate post. Might I just add that not only have our actions radicalized Islam to an extreme, but it's taken some otherwise decent people in this country way far off the edge of reality--by severely radicalizing the Christian right as well. But those people never think for themselves anyway. They are stuck somewhere back in 6th grade, intellectually, just as their religion doesn't speak to the 21st century.

How ironic that the Christian right believes they own the market on Pro-life, as in every other circumstance--war, the environment, etc.--they choose the way of death & destruction. F**ing hypocrites!!!

The only LIFE worth saving is not just a white American Christian's life. It's ALL life--for our future and our children's future.

I know you know this, SF Liberal, just had to get that off my chest. Thanks.

Nice. As a former Mission resident, I can safely say Farolito has the best burriots, and I left my heart in Zeitgeist. (Right near the tow truck.)

20 years from now, or maybe less, most intelligent folks will look back and see the error of this B.S. war in Iraq, just as we do now with Vietnam. (I hate to make that association, but there it is...)

Hey BP, I've heard good things about Farolito but haven't made it there yet. When I'm in the Mission, I usually hit Cancun or El Toro for burritos. There's a new website that rates every tacqueria in the city at which helped me find a great one near me in the Sunset.

As most of the reality based community would consider Vietnam to have been a huge stupid mistake, there are still those (see Phil above) who think that it was somehow about defending our freedom and trying to give liberty to the Vietnamese. I'm sure that 20 years from now, there will be people who think that the Iraq war was something we needed to do. I have a name for people like that: Asshats.

Hello San Fransisco! Good post! I thought I'd add to the fun.

Here are some questions for those of you who want to fight this war...... 1. Why are the three permanant US bases in Afghanistan located along the pipe line built by Halliburton and not in near the areas where the people can be protected from the Taliban? 2. Why have a major portion of Iraqi businesses and assets been privitized. Bremer under orders from the White house sold off Iraqi financial and resource belongings. The Iraqi people have no rights to any profits and have not been compensated. Why wuold we do this to people we are HELPING? Whose oil is it now? 3. If you haven't had the pleasure of combat...when are YOU enlisting? PS. I do not condone the actions of the Muslim religious fanatics or the Christian fanatics.

I read you, but I don't always agree with you.

America went to war to save American lives and to defend the American legacy of demcocracy.

All moderate muslims are green snakes under green grass waiting for someone to start a fire that will turn them to rattle snakes from the pit of hell.
They grin at you and curse you as "infidels" behind your back.
Beware of them.

The terrorists are our enemies.
And the enemiews of humanity and they will pay for all their horrible and terrible crimes against humanity.

Orikinla, how is creating terrorism in Iraq helping save American lives? There were no WMDs and Iraq was never anything even closely resembling a threat to the US. But that war has wasted the lives of over 1800 Americans and countless Iraqis, and for what exactly?

"All moderate muslims are green snakes under green grass waiting for someone to start a fire that will turn them to rattle snakes from the pit of hell.

This sounds exactly like the sort of thing that people like binLaden say about westerners to justify their Jihad. How does that make you morally superior?
