Bush Knew

Just taking a break from diapers, peek-a-boo and cuddles to mention something that I'm sure just about every other liberal blogger is blogging about and something every right wing blogger is busy making excuses for. You know how all the right wingers were saying that there's no way anybody could have known about just how devastating hurricane Katrina might have been to New Orleans? WRONG! Looks like Brownie actually did a heck of a job briefing Bush about what could have gone down and Bush ignored that just like he ignored that bipartisan report on homeland security that described how al Quaeda could turn a commercial jet into a missile and attack us with it. But hey, he was on vacation. He was far too busy raising funds for the RNC and making photo ops to help out a city that didn't vote for him. Maybe Kanye West had a point afterall.

unfortunately its probably true. just like most of these disasters, our government and its officials couldn't seem to give a shit. its as if they enjoy the chaos. some might call this the "hero" complex...always coming to the rescue, although VERY late.

they appear concerned & avoid the intial detrius and step in after the dust has started to clear to get acclaim and "explain" it all away instead of really doing any good.

truly inhuman and pathetic.

Interestingly enough, tape has surfaced of Governor Blanco saying that the levees have held, 3 hours AFTER the levees had been breached. There is enough indecision and bad decision going on in this administration (and really, EVERY administration) without having to filter through erroneous information. And our government should have errored on the side of caution. Still, when the governor of a state calls the Federal government and says "we're okay," you pretty much have a tendency to believe her.

i agree.
there was corruption and mis-managment all the way round.

thats the government...the arbiter of "control" of the situation, or "mind" of the situation in this case.

every level is incompetent (or manipulative, depending on how you view things) each to it own degree, but all of the same shade of clockwork.

it shows that our gov't systems we rely on are severly flawed because human nature, the corrupted variety and its servants are willing to let nature run its course and innocent be destroyed for their own benefits..which equals money/debt/payoffs/contracts etc.

the political games are transparent now, and its rather unfair that the toll is taken from citizens caught in the ensuing fray.

A question from this confused Limey over the pond in blighty, why do those moral, upstanding Republicans get this lying incompetent president out of office. They were very keen to do it with Clinton because he lied about ruining some poor girl's dress, but this guy's lies have meant that people have actually died!

Strange eh!

I totally hear you mark. I serve in the US military, and it's very embarrassing to have such a person for a commander-in-chief. To have such incompetence and stupidity represent myself and my country, you'd think we'd be done and over with getting him out of office.

The thing is, like you said, your partisan politics keeps it from happening at all. Not to mention we have a society that kind of encourages people to stay at home for longer periods of time, secluded from the rest of the world, and all it does is create more ignorance and xenophobia (i.e. more Republicans). Just look at the south.

It's no wonder why the world continues to steadily hate the US more and more.

look, clinton was a smooth talker, but not some great president,& not to say bush is, but seriously the whole dang system is screwed. bush is just more screwy and blatant than most,he donn't care that hes got mental problems.

we don't FREELY choose these leaders...they are assigned to us to choose from, appointed ] a group of well connected individuals..

its not as if left or right matters all that much anymore.... they all are in on the same agendas, just different spins. the complicity within govt is painfully obvious, and its not just in america..we are just the most obvious of all!

"Given the low level of competence among politicians, every American should become a libertarian. The government that governs the least is certainly the best choice when fools, opportunists and grafters run it. When power is for sale, then government power should be severely limited. When power is abused, then the less power the better."

Wow, there's quite the discussion going on this. Welcome Photon Shower.

Fred, how do you suppose a minimalist libertarian government might have responded to a disaster like this? Would the free market somehow save this city?
